This past year has been particularly devastating and historic when it comes to wildfires. The entire west coast struggled with ravaging wildfires that appear to be the “new normal” for California, Oregon, and Washington. One of Cali Select’s founders was interviewed about the impact of these wildfires in the cannabis industry on Marijuana Business Daily.
What is different about this year’s wildfires?
He noted that this year was a record-breaking fire season with the most acres burned in history. The worst part was that there was no end in sight. Climate change continues to impact all parts of the US with stronger storms on the east coast and bigger wildfires on the west coast to name a couple of examples.
The impact of this year’s fire season is yet to be seen by the cannabis supply chain. The effects of the wildfires as well as the chemicals used to contain them could impact crops across the west coast which throws into question their ability to pass state testing.
What is Cali Select doing about wildfires?
He brought up long term prevention and preparation solutions. For example, one of the ideas was to bring in livestock to keep brush and weeds down as a form of prevention. Another idea to be implemented is weekly fire safety meetings.
Working in any kind of cultivation in California, Oregon, and Washington should require preparation now that wildfires are considered the “new normal”.
